The Queensway waterfront redevelopment focused on a new aquarium and recreational facilities in what was a deteriorated part of a once beautiful waterfront. The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth is moored just across the inlet from the pier.
This project is a classic example of a large-scale municipal project influenced by environmental concerns. After the project had been contracted, the city decided to change its purchasing policies to include as much FSC® certified ipe as possible and was willing to pay a premium price for the decking and was willing, reluctantly, to wait for the delayed delivery of the product. This project was a pioneering project that would now be much easier to fulfill in FSC® certified Naturally Durable™ hardwoods like ipé.
